About the destination

Santorini is a crescent of volcanic cliffs around a flooded caldera, with whitewashed villages, blue-domed churches and some of the Aegean's finest sunsets. April to October is the main season for ferries, beaches and boat trips, while spring and autumn are calmer and cooler. Plan three or four days for Fira, Oia, Akrotiri, a winery and a beach or two.

What makes this place special

  • Oia and Fira on the caldera rim
  • The walking path along the rim between them, roughly 10 km
  • The Bronze Age town of Akrotiri, preserved under volcanic ash
  • The Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira
  • Red Beach and the black sand of Perissa
  • Assyrtiko wineries on volcanic soil
  • A boat trip to the volcano of Nea Kameni and the hot springs beside it.
